Week 5: Shepherd's pie

Although it takes some time to prepare, this shepherd's pie tastes amazing—a hearty meal for 6 that won't break the bank! The rosemary in the recipe really made it for me.

...and this was the final week of our office's Food Revolution Challenge! Thanks to this little push to cook more homemade meals, I've had the opportunity/excuse to try a lot of new recipes that I'll be keeping in my books for years to come.

Week 4: Old-fashioned sweet shortcrust pastry

I used this pastry recipe for the base of some lemon meringue tarts over the weekend. The recipe consists of simple ingredients and is very easy to follow, even if you’ve never made pastry from scratch before.

Meringues seem to be hit and miss with me... -_- Maybe it's the carton egg whites that I get but I don't like using non-pasturized version right out of the shell.

Oh my goodness, risotto is so satisfying on a dreary winter day. I'll be keeping this recipe in my books for sure.

BACKSTORY
Working a full time job often results in relying on take-out, frozen or "instant" meals. I know this well as my shelves are usually stocked with a never ending supply of canned soups, instant ramen and many other food items that have expiry dates set in a far distant future.

CHALLENGE
With this in mind, my workplace recently started up an internal Food Revolution Challenge à la Jamie Oliver. Each week, we've been challenged to cook one of his recipes, take a photo to prove it, and for each dish we get entered towards a prize. Cool beans.

My entry for week 1: Bolognese Sauce with Pasta

This recipe worked out great. It takes some time to prep but the end result is totally worth it.

It wasn't really what I expected... but the visuals were pretty memorable. The characters and events were strange (and violent?) but there was some good emotion in it... like when the seemingly scary bull looking guy with hobbit feet finally speaks! *tear* Favourite part.
